Felicia recognized him right away—Mr. Carey, CEO of a listed company. She knew all too well that he wouldn’t be where he was today without his wife’s family pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Right then, the woman next to Mr. Carey turned and announced she needed the restroom.
When Mr. Carey glanced around and spotted Felicia, he froze for a split second, then put on a friendly face.
“Felicia, what a surprise! Didn’t expect to see you here.”
Felicia gave him a cool, polite smile.
“Hello, Mr. Carey.”
The woman at his side shot Felicia a look full of warning.
“And you are…?”
Mr. Carey quickly jumped in.
“Felicia’s the investment director over at Roen Capital.”
Instantly, the woman eyed Felicia up and down, clearly trying to figure her out. She looked suspicious, as if she couldn’t believe someone Felicia’s age could really be a director—probably thought Felicia slept her way up.
Felicia saw the judgment in her eyes, but she just let it slide.
Mr. Carey turned to his companion again.
“Why don’t you go ahead? I’ll wait right here.”
He had a project in mind he wanted to pitch to Roen Capital after the holidays. Running into Felicia like this felt like fate, and he wasn’t about to waste the opportunity.
The woman, her belly undeniably rounded, seemed to catch the hint and headed off.
Felicia, absolutely uninterested in chatting, was about to excuse herself when she noticed a middle-aged woman striding toward them, her face thunderous. A younger woman trailed behind, whispering quickly in her ear. The older woman’s anger flared even brighter, and she charged straight for them.
Mr. Carey, still facing away from the entrance, had no idea what was about to hit him.
Then, a woman’s voice cracked through the air.
“Reef!”
Mr. Carey whipped around, his face draining of color. It was Mrs. Carey. He stammered, fear bleeding into his words.
“You… What are you doing here?”
Felicia didn’t want to get pulled into this mess. She started to push her shopping cart away, catching Jeremy’s eye as he strode over. They connected, just for a heartbeat.
Before she could make her escape, a shrill voice rang out behind her.
