Max showed up that morning with his arms full of New Year’s gifts.
With Anne there, Colton and Ava kept their cool, hiding any sign they weren’t exactly thrilled to see him.
Max knelt down in front of Anne, meeting her eyes. “Why don’t you have lunch with Mommy today? I’ll come pick you both up this afternoon.”
Anne had been hoping her dad would stay for the meal, but Max told her he had plans to have lunch with Uncle Darin.
She gave in without making a fuss.
“Okay, Daddy. Eat lots with Uncle Darin, and come get Mommy and me soon, okay?”
Colton’s face tightened just a bit at that.
Max promised, “I will.”
Standing, he turned to Felicia. “I’ll be back early as I can.”
Felicia didn’t say anything.
A moment later, Max headed out.
After lunch, Felicia sat with Anne in the living room, searching for the right words.
Anne suddenly flopped into her mother’s arms, giggling. “We can have holiday dinner together tonight, Mommy!”
Felicia looked down at Anne’s bright, hopeful face. This would be their first holiday dinner together.
Next year, or the year after that, would they have another chance like this?
Whatever Felicia wanted to say, she swallowed it down.
Somewhere else, in an upscale restaurant...
