Felicia walked over to Anne and spoke softly. “Anne, remember we said we’d stay here with Yara and Aunt Heather? We can’t just leave them behind.”
Anne puffed up her cheeks, looking stubborn. “But Daddy’s here now. We can’t leave Daddy, either. Mommy, can we just stay with Daddy tonight?”
Felicia sighed. “I don’t feel well and want to rest. How about you go out with Daddy today?”
Anne obviously wanted to be with Max, and Felicia knew trying to keep her wouldn’t work.
Anne turned back to Max, hope lighting up her face.
Max gently patted her hair. “Mommy should get some rest. You can spend today with me.”
Anne hesitated for a second, then mumbled, “Okay... I guess.”
Max didn’t say anything else to Felicia. Not a word. And Felicia didn’t bother with him, either.
She asked the nanny to pack a couple of Anne’s outfits and handed them over to Max.
Max scooped Anne up and carried her out to the car. Anne climbed inside and waved at Felicia through the window.
The car rolled slowly down the street. Felicia stood there and watched until it disappeared completely, then finally turned and went back inside.
Heather and Yara were in the living room.
“Will Anne come back?” Heather asked.
Felicia dropped onto the sofa, her voice flat. “I don’t know.”
Heather glanced over at her. “Is Max just not comfortable with you looking after Anne? Or is he scared you’ll take her away? He seemed really eager to get her out of here.”
