After dinner, Max’s driver took Felicia’s car and gave Heather and Yara a ride home.
Felicia and Anne slid into Max’s car.
“Cian’s throwing a little cocktail party,” Max said. “He invited just a few close friends. We should go together.”
Before Felicia could say anything, Anne piped up from the backseat. “I want to go too.”
Max glanced over his shoulder at her, smiling. “Of course you’re coming, Anne.”
With Anne in the car, the whole ride was filled with laughter and easy conversation. Max kept cracking jokes, and Anne couldn’t stop giggling. She ended up sprawled across Felicia’s lap, laughing so hard her cheeks turned pink.
Half an hour later, they pulled up to the Ross family’s villa. Felicia and Anne were staying there again tonight.
When they got out, Max looked at Felicia and said, “I’ll come pick you and Anne up in a couple of days.”
Felicia just gave him a quick look, then turned to Anne. “Say goodbye to Daddy.”
Anne waved enthusiastically. “Bye, Daddy. Drive safe!”
Max grinned. “I will. Go get inside.”
Felicia took Anne’s hand and headed for the house. Max stayed by the car, watching until they disappeared inside. Then he got back in, just as his phone started buzzing. He checked the caller ID and picked up.
“Hello?”
A polite voice answered, “Mr. Hawthorne, we found it.”
At home, Colton and Ava were relaxing in the living room.
Felicia’s entire career, all her achievements, were thanks to Jeremy’s support. If she hadn’t changed so much, would Max even look at her the way he does now? Would Anne have accepted her?
Jeremy had given her more than she could ever repay. What he wanted in return was Felicia herself.
Ava’s thoughts drifted to Luke for a moment. She couldn’t help but sigh. Both men were completely in lovr with Felicia. If Felicia ever divorced Max, no matter who she ended up with, someone would get hurt. It was hard to even think about.
She wasn’t sure how Felicia really felt about Jeremy or Luke. Were they just friends? Was it just respect between employer and employee? It wasn’t a question she could bring herself to ask.
Maybe this was Felicia’s challenge in this life, and there was no easy way out.
While Felicia and Ava were talking, Felicia’s phone started to buzz. She pulled it from her bag and walked over to the window to answer.
“Hi, Jeremy.”
