Adrian looked at Felicia. “Jeremy got hurt while saving you. But you shouldn’t blame yourself. That’s what he chose to do. His mom’s here now, and she’ll take good care of him. You don’t need to worry.”
Felicia nodded. “Alright.”
Heather opened her mouth like she wanted to say something, but her mom gave her a look and she clammed up, pouting instead. She shot a quick glance at her brother lying in the hospital bed, but Jeremy didn’t say a word.
It was about time to leave.
Felicia started gathering her things, ready to go with Anne.
Shannon smiled at the kids. “It’s been ages since you girls played together. Heather, why don’t you take Yara and go have some fun with Felicia and Anne?”
Heather agreed right away. “Okay. Jeremy, we’re heading out. Get some rest.”
Jeremy just nodded. “Bye. Don’t worry about me.”
Felicia said goodbye to Jeremy, then she and Heather led Anne and Yara out of the room.
Once they’d left, Adrian looked at his son. “So, that little girl really is hers.”
Jeremy just made a sound, not really answering.
Adrian went on, “She’s got a kid. I don’t get why you’re still stuck on her. She’s not the only pretty woman in the world, you know.”
Jeremy stayed silent, staring at the ceiling.
Shannon spoke up. “That’s enough. Jeremy’s still recovering, let’s not do this now.”
Anne and Yara walked ahead, hand in hand, their laughter echoing down the hallway.
Heather sighed. “I didn’t even tell my parents about my brother getting hurt. I was going to wait until he got a bit better. No idea how they found out. But honestly, it’s kind of nice having Mom here to help out.”
“By the way, any news from Anthony?” Heather asked.
“Nothing yet,” Felicia replied. “Whoever’s behind this probably covered their tracks pretty well. It’s going to take time to find them, but they must’ve left some kind of clue.”
Just then, Heather’s phone rang. She checked the screen, then answered. “Yara’s with me. I’ll take care of her myself.”
She hung up, scowling. Her mood shifted, a heaviness settling over her. There was a time when she and Trey were inseparable, but now, just hearing his voice made her tense up.
Funny how quickly things could change. Maybe the only way to avoid getting hurt was to keep your heart to yourself.
Felicia’s phone buzzed with a message from Max. Let’s take Anne out for dinner tonight. I’ll come pick you up.
She just glanced at it and slipped her phone back in her bag, not bothering to reply.
