Mary faltered, about to insist again. “But I made it especially for you—”

“Mary,” Fitch suddenly interjected, his voice calm but firm. “Tamara just got back. Let her rest first.”

Mary finally realized she had overstepped, and she nodded quickly. “Yes, yes, the master is right. I’ve said too much! Tamara, please, go upstairs and rest.” She scurried to the side, not daring to say another word.
