Satisfied, Dante nodded and walked away with his cane.
Callahan pushed the door open and returned to the room to find Leilani gazing softly at the wooden box in her hands. Walking over to the bed, he asked quietly, "What did Grandpa tell you?"
Leilani looked up, a faint smile on her lips. "Nothing much... He just told you to take good care of me."
Callahan chuckled softly and leaned down to kiss her forehead. "I would do that even if he didn't say it."
Since Leilani was still recovering from severe weakness, she drifted back to sleep shortly after.
Once Callahan confirmed she wasn't slipping into an unnatural coma and that the doctors had assured him she simply needed rest to rebuild her blood supply, he barred anyone else from disturbing her so she could sleep peacefully.
...
The next morning, golden sunlight poured through the curtains.
The door to Leilani's room was pushed open as Yvonne and Judie peeked their heads in. "Leilani!"
The moment Yvonne saw Leilani on the bed, her eyes welled up with tears, and she practically sprinted over. "How are you? How did you get so hurt? What did the doctors say? Does the wound hurt?"
Judie trailed closely behind, hauling several bags of fruit and nutritional supplements. Her voice trembled with lingering fear. "Leilani, you scared us to death..."
Propped up against the pillows, Leilani looked much better, despite her pale complexion. Seeing their frantic state, a small smile curved her lips. "I'm fine. It's just a few minor scratches."
