Callahan was caught completely off guard. He hadn't expected her to use such a tactic. This was undeniably the most intimate gesture Leilani had initiated since they started dating. Even though he knew exactly what she was playing at, he couldn't help but be thoroughly swayed. His icy demeanor instantly thawed.
Leilani continued."I absolutely have to go to Savage Mountain. But if you can figure out a way to get me inside safely... I will take you with me on this trip. Would that put your mind at ease?"
Leilani's warm breath brushed against Callahan's ear, carrying her faint, intoxicating signature scent of herbal medicine.
Callahan's Adam's apple bobbed, his dark eyes deepening with unmistakable heat. "...Leilani, can I really trust you on that?"
If she was actually willing to bring him along, that changed everything. In a matter of seconds, his mind was already shifting gears, plotting out the logistics of an expedition to Savage Mountain.
Leilani leaned back, her expression reverting to its usual cool composure. "Think whatever you like."
She had already laid her cards on the table. If he still refused to help, there was nothing more she could do. She still had Floyd working on a contingency plan anyway.
Callahan stared at her for a few beats, the tension completely draining from his face. "Fine. I'll make the arrangements."
Leilani arched an eyebrow. "Changed your mind that quickly?"
Callahan gave a soft snort. "If I can't stop you, I might as well keep you directly under my watch."
...
Later, inside a private dining room at the restaurant, warm, ambient lighting spilled over crisp white tablecloths.
Leilani took a sip from her water glass and glanced across the table at Callahan. "How was work at the company while I was away on this trip?"
It was a rare occurrence for Leilani to proactively initiate casual conversation, likely a peace offering after their earlier dispute.
Callahan, who had been flipping through the menu, paused and looked up, a smirk playing on his lips. "What's this? You've finally remembered to show some concern for me?"
Leilani didn't miss a beat. "I was just asking. You don't have to answer if you don't want to."
