The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 481

Inside the laboratory.

Malcolm removed his safety goggles and rubbed his stinging, weary eyes. "Leilani, let's call it a day."

He checked the time and cast an apologetic look at her. "I've kept you here late again."

Leilani shook her head as she saved the final set of data. "Don't worry about it. If anything, I should be the one apologizing to you. I’m the reason you're stuck here this late."

Although they still hadn't found a cure for Payton's poison, she believed that perseverance was key. Rome wasn't built in a day, and she held onto the hope that a breakthrough could happen at any moment if they just kept trying.

Leilani took off her lab coat, suddenly remembering something. "Oh, right. Abel should be waiting for me outside."

Malcolm nodded in recognition. "That young man who always brings you meals?"

Initially, Malcolm hadn't known the relationship between Abel and Leilani. When he first saw the young man lurking suspiciously near the lab entrance, he had assumed he was a corporate spy and had even sent one of his students to chase him off. He felt rather embarrassed after learning the truth—that the 'spy' was actually Leilani's friend.

"Yes, I asked him to pick me up," Leilani said, packing her backpack. "You know how I get when I'm busy; I tend to lose track of everything. If you hadn't reminded me, I might have forgotten he was out there."

Malcolm smiled. "He's a thoughtful lad. You should head back now. Don't stay this late next time. If Abel wasn't picking you up, I wouldn't feel comfortable letting a young woman go home alone in the middle of the night."

Before meeting Leilani, Malcolm had considered himself quite driven compared to his peers. But after working with her, he realized he was standing next to a true workaholic. With her level of dedication, it was no wonder she had achieved so much at such a young age.
