He took a deep breath, shoved the card into his pocket, and walked away without looking back.
Since he had decided to bow his head, he would bow it all the way. But once he rose again in the future, he would make everyone who plotted against him pay.
Clive drove away from the company. At twilight, he arrived at Banyan Manor.
He stood at the entrance of the villa, his fingertips tight. He had intentionally worn a low-key black casual outfit, a mask, and a baseball cap to avoid attention. Yet, when the butler opened the door, the man's gaze made him feel exposed and scrutinized.
Winifred's butler was a man in his fifties, hair combed meticulously, suit pressed to perfection, eyes indifferent. He swept a glance over Clive, the corner of his mouth curling down almost imperceptibly, as if he had seen this scene a thousand times.
"You are Mr. Sloan?" The butler's voice was calm but carried a distinct chill of routine. "Madam is waiting for you inside. Come in."
This summons-like attitude made Clive sick to his stomach. He tightened his jaw, suppressing his discomfort, and nodded slightly. "Yes."
The butler stepped aside to clear a path but let his gaze linger on Clive for a second longer than necessary. It was a look of disdain, the kind one gives to a piece of merchandise up for sale.
The interior was shockingly opulent. Crystal chandeliers refracted blinding light that stung his eyes. Clive stood in the foyer, subtly observing the house. The European-style ceiling featured embossed golden vines, with every leaf detailed to an obsessive degree. Beneath his feet, imported Italian marble tiles shone like mirrors, reflecting his stiff expression. To his left, an entire wall of shelves displayed antique porcelain, the glazes gleaming coldly under the spotlights.
The butler led him to the second-floor sitting room. Facing the room's occupant, the butler's attitude instantly shifted to one of warm respect. He spoke softly, "Madam, Mr. Sloan has arrived."
On the sofa, a voluptuous woman sat with her back to the door, slowly sipping red wine. Hearing the announcement, she turned around slowly.
Clive's pupils contracted slightly. He recognized her face.
