The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 449

“Goodbye.”

“Bye.”

Leilani hung up but remained by the window, clutching her phone. The night was deep, but her heart felt wrapped in something warm and steady. So this was what it felt like to be cared for.

She looked down at the screen, which still displayed her call log with Callahan. Tracing his name with her finger, a tender look filled her eyes.

Downstairs, Abel called out that dinner was ready. Leilani went down to find a table full of food. It didn't look like much, but it smelled surprisingly good.

Abel eagerly served her some food. “Dr. Sloan, try the pot roast! It’s my specialty!”

Leilani took a bite and nodded in surprise. “It’s actually pretty good.”

Just as he had said, it was simple, home-cooked food. Leilani, who couldn't cook and wasn't picky, enjoyed it. However, the picky Payton was a different story.

Emboldened by Leilani’s praise, Abel grinned and put a serving on Payton’s plate. “Payton, you try some too!”

Payton glanced in his direction, expressionless. “Too salty.”

Abel’s face fell. Leilani pressed her lips together to hide a smile.

...

The night passed peacefully. With the medicine bought and tools ready, Leilani began Payton's treatment as soon as she woke up the next day. She had chosen an airy spare room to serve as the clinic.
