Enraged, he slapped the subordinate across the face. “What else are we supposed to do? Did you see how spooky that woman was? If you have a death wish, don’t drag me into it!”

Black subconsciously touched the back of his neck, where the stinging pain of the needle lingered. He gritted his teeth, thinking viciously. Abel got lucky today. Once that woman was gone, he’d come back to reclaim his territory. But as for her... he never wanted to see that nightmare of a woman again.

It was evening in the rundown urban village. Having survived the brawl, the two walked back carrying the herbal medicine. As they turned the corner toward the rental unit, they saw a man in a crisp suit standing at the door, holding a brown paper bag.

Seeing Leilani approach, the man bowed slightly, his tone respectful. “Hello. Are you Ms. Sloan?”

Leilani paused, her eyes narrowing warily. “Who are you?”

The man smiled gently and offered the paper bag with both hands. “Mr. Langley sent me to deliver this to you.”

Leilani took the bag and opened it. Inside lay a set of keys, a keycard, and a handwritten note. [The keys and card will get you into the house. Text me when you get home. Stay safe, don’t make me worry.]

Leilani stared at the words for two seconds, her lips curving upward involuntarily.
