She couldn't wrap her head around it. Lance had always been polite and gentlemanly toward her. Why the sudden shift in attitude?
Although confused, she plastered a sweet smile on her face. "Lance, I'm here to find Carola," she said enthusiastically. "She hasn't replied to my messages lately. I was a bit worried, so I came to see if she was home..."
Lance stared at her darkly, not responding immediately. He found it laughable. Tamara worried about Carola? What a joke. If she were truly worried, she would have come the day he locked Carola up, or the day after. Showing up now, after so much time had passed, simply meant she needed Carola for something again.
However, even knowing her motives were impure, Lance couldn't make a scene at the front door. He stepped aside, making a path, his tone indifferent. "Come in first."
Tamara stepped into the Conner residence. However, the moment she entered the living room, she sensed the atmosphere was wrong. Felicity, the Conner matriarch, was sitting on the sofa holding a coffee cup. She didn't even lift her eyelids, acting as if Tamara didn't exist.
Tamara tentatively looked toward the back of the house, searching for Carola.
Lance stepped directly in front of her, his tall figure radiating an oppressive pressure.
"Ms. Sloan," he began, his voice cold as ice. "I didn't get a chance to tell you at the door. Carola has been unwell recently. It is not convenient for her to see guests. Don't trouble yourself."
Tamara's smile froze, a flicker of panic crossing her eyes. She still couldn't figure out why Lance was treating her like this. Quickly, she masked her reaction with a look of deep concern. "Lance, what happened to Carola? Is it serious? Can I just take a peek at her?"
Her tone was solicitous, her eyes rimmed with red, as if she were truly distressed for her best friend.
Lance stared at her for a few seconds before laughing abruptly—a laugh that didn't reach his eyes. "Ms. Sloan, do you think everyone is an idiot? Do you think we'll all be fooled by this pitiful act of yours?"
