Leilani was just starting to feel bored when she heard the auctioneer on stage make an announcement.
“The next item up for bid is Lot 37. A century-old wild ‘Snow Reishi’! Starting bid: five million.”
Leilani’s gaze sharpened, and she immediately sat up straight. This was the rare medicinal herb she had spotted in the catalog earlier!
Most of the people attending the auction were business owners or trust fund kids; very few were interested in herbs. The bidding started quickly, but compared to the previous items, fewer people participated.
Even so, after a few rounds of bidding, the price of the Snow Reishi soared to twelve million, and the number of participants gradually decreased. Eventually, only Leilani and Zoey remained.
There were few people bidding for herbs to begin with. If Zoey hadn't been maliciously driving up the price, the Snow Reishi would have already landed in Leilani’s pocket for six million.
Leilani frowned and looked toward the box where Zoey was sitting. The other woman gave her a provocative look, elegantly holding up her paddle with a slight smirk on her red lips.
“Fifteen million.”
Leilani glanced at her indifferently and continued to raise the bid.
“Sixteen million.”
Seeing that the two were locking horns, Zoey’s assistant whispered a word of advice. “Miss, we have absolutely no use for this herb. There's no need to spend sixteen million...”
Sixteen million had already far exceeded the intrinsic value of the herb. If Zoey’s father found out she spent sixteen million on a mushroom and that he hadn't stopped her, he would be chewed out.
Zoey ignored the assistant’s anxiety. Her family had money anyway. So what if it was sixteen million? She just wanted to slap Leilani in the face.
