The news that the Chen Kingdom’s grand army was to invade Yuegu City had long been broadcasted, and every household had their doors and windows tightly shut.
Gu Chengfeng stood atop the City Tower, pacing back and forth anxiously.
At last, he saw a large number of soldiers rushing towards Yuegu City, but among them, he could not spot Tang Yueshan and Gu Jiao.
"There are still people behind." A Soldier said.
Gu Chengfeng ordered them to quickly enter the city.
Wave after wave of wounded soldiers came, but Gu Jiao’s figure was nowhere to be seen. Gradually, a layer of frost formed between Gu Chengfeng’s brows.
Having spent so much time with Gu Jiao, how could he fail to guess what she was up to?
Traditionally, the truly injured were brought back to the city for treatment, but if they died en route or were left with lifelong disabilities, there was nothing that could be done—yet Gu Jiao would not do that.
"You girl..."
Gu Chengfeng clenched his fists, now truly regretting allowing her to go fetch Tang Yueshan. It would have been better if he had made her stay here.
No, that’s wrong. If she had stayed, the soldiers’ casualties would have been much higher...
Just as Gu Chengfeng was on the verge of extreme anxiety, a soldier beside him suddenly spoke up, "My lord! Look!"
Gu Chengfeng raised his eyes to look.
Gu Jiao had returned!
She was riding the most splendid and fastest horse, holding the longest and heaviest spear, rushing back along the road!
Along with her and racing back were Tang Yueshan and his soldiers.
Close on the heels of the group, Chen Kingdom’s iron cavalry was crazily pursuing them.
The Chen Kingdom’s grand army had realized they’d been tricked; the imperial reinforcements had not arrived at all. Everything had been a ruse—a handful of soldiers deliberately creating elaborate deceptions!
To regain face, more than four thousand of the Chen Kingdom’s iron cavalry charged with the momentum to trample mountains and rivers, initiating a frenzied hunt of Gu Jiao, Tang Yueshan, and their troops!
Above on the City Tower, Governor Cheng, upon witnessing this startling scene, was so frightened that his legs gave way, and his body swayed, nearly crashing into the wall!
He exclaimed in great alarm, "Oh no! The Chen Kingdom’s grand army is here! Quick, close the city gate! Close the gate!"
"Don’t close it!" Gu Chengfeng barked!
With heartfelt sincerity, Governor Cheng pleaded, "My lord! If we don’t close it now, it will be too late! You might not think for yourself, but consider the people in the city! I know, the Grand Marshal and the other lord are still outside, but to risk the lives of the entire city’s population for just a dozen or so lives..."
Gu Jiao was the first to ride up; her horse was good and could easily cross over, but instead, she came to an abrupt halt in front of the gate!
She reined tightly, turned her head, and said, "Let the wounded go in first!"
Two wounded soldiers spurred their horses onto the drawbridge, which had been raised a foot high.
Immediately after, she allowed Hu Dongqiang and the Archers to follow onto the bridge in succession.
As the last Archer made it onto the bridge, the Chen Kingdom’s Cavalry launched an attack; a volley of arrows flew, hitting the Archer’s horse, and both horse and rider immediately tumbled to the ground.
Gu Jiao rode over, leaned out, grabbed the Archer, and flung him onto the drawbridge.
By then, the drawbridge was already halfway up; the horses could not cross it.
"Stop! Everyone stop!" Gu Chengfeng shouted loudly.
"It can’t be stopped!" Governor Cheng responded.
The drawbridge lifted faster as it drew to a close, and Gu Jiao and Tang Yueshan were still outside.
While dodging arrows from the Chen Kingdom’s Cavalry, Tang Yueshan grabbed Gu Jiao and hurled her forcefully onto the drawbridge!
It all happened in a flash. By the time Gu Jiao tumbled down from the drawbridge, it had already slammed shut behind her!
