The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 478

She obediently picked up the bowl and began sipping the soup.

Rhys's heart began to hammer uncontrollably in his chest.

How long had it been since he'd seen Clara so unguarded?

Four years. Over a thousand days and nights.

She was once again like a little hedgehog that had retracted all its quills, showing its softest side.

After dinner, the family sat on the sofa and chatted for a bit before unanimously deciding to spend the night at Oakridge Avenue.

Still shaken from the day's events, Clara's parents decided to have Felix sleep with them, which would help calm everyone's nerves.

While the little boy was being taken by his grandparents to get washed up, Clara sat on the sofa, rubbing her throbbing temples.

Rhys walked over and crouched in front of her, gently touching her cheek.

It was warm.

Just that one tiny cup was enough to get her like this.

Rhys mentally filed that away, wondering if he could coax her into having a little drink at home sometime.

"Does your head hurt?"

Clara shook her head. "Not really, just a little dizzy. I think I'll go lie down for a bit."

"I'll help you to your room."

Rhys had kept Clara's room immaculate during the years she was away, and her parents had continued to clean it after they moved back in. It was spotless.

He pushed the door open and helped her sit on the edge of the bed.

The room was dark, lit only by the moonlight and the streetlamps outside.

Rhys knelt before her and gently tucked her hair behind her ears.

In her tipsy state, Clara was exceptionally docile, letting him take care of her without protest.

She quietly watched the man in front of her.

Over the past month, perhaps because Clara had been by his side and had been letting her guard down, he had been less consumed by the fear of losing her. His appetite had returned, and his mood had improved.
