Apart from Mia, Justin Huntington had never been able to keep any of his other biological children.
The crowd now swarming in was a collection of distant relatives who were rarely seen, along with company shareholders eager for the latest news.
The group, having left and now returned, were dressed in suits, arguing and talking amongst themselves.
"What did the doctor say? How did he end up in intensive care? Wasn't he able to drink some porridge just a few days ago?"
"Exactly! The project is still waiting for the old man's approval. If he... then what about the will? We need a clear word on the inheritance!"
Clara frowned slightly.
They weren't even bothering to pretend.
She pulled Felix close, shielding his face in her arms, nodded at Mia, and turned toward the nearby fire exit.
Mia understood that Clara didn't want those people to see the child, to prevent them from getting any ideas about him.
She didn't stop her, closing her eyes and taking a couple of deep breaths to compose herself.
When she opened them again, her grief was suppressed. She straightened her back and scolded them with a cold expression, "What's all the noise! The man is still lying in there, he hasn't breathed his last yet, and you're already here clamoring to divide the assets? All of you, get downstairs and wait!"
These people were, after all, wary of Mia.
She was the old man's only daughter and the current head of the group's actual business operations. No matter how the will was written or how the shares were divided, her portion would undoubtedly be the largest.
The group fell silent, looking abashed.
Rhys watched Clara leave but didn't follow.
He knew his responsibility now.
He had to stay here, to prevent them from having any chance to pry into Clara and Felix's lives, to keep the toxic affairs of the Huntington family from tainting them ever again.
Clara led Felix out of the inpatient building's main entrance.
The snow in the flowerbeds below the hospital was thick, and a cold wind blew, chilling them to the bone.
"Mommy, were those people Daddy's family? They were so loud, it sounded like they were fighting," Felix sniffled, complaining softly.
