The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 404

"Everything you're doing now, Noah has been doing for the past four years." Simon's words were merciless, aimed straight for the most painful spot. "What he can give Clara is something you'll never learn in this lifetime."

Rhys's eyes darkened.

They reached the ground floor. Simon stepped out, then paused before the doors closed, glancing back at him. "Just watch yourself. Don't get yourself killed and drag Clara down with you. She doesn't owe you anything, and neither does the Bridges family."

The elevator doors slowly slid shut.

Rhys watched the gap close and, just before it sealed completely, he answered in a low, firm voice, "That day will never come."

Clara had only moved back here with Rhys yesterday, and many small things were still unpacked.

When he came back inside, Clara was on the sofa, looking at her phone.

Rhys finished tidying up the rest of the kitchen, then came out and went to the guest room to check on Felix, who was drawing. After confirming the boy was behaving, he walked to the other side of the sofa and stood at a distance.

"Do you want some water?" he asked.

Clara didn't look up. "No."

"How about some fruit? I can cut up an orange."

"No, thanks."

"Is it hot in here? Should I turn down the temperature?"

"It's fine."

"..."

A string of rejections hit him, leaving Rhys at a loss. He could only stand there, watching her.

After a moment, he spoke again. "I've tidied up the kitchen and taken out the trash. I'll go to the station tomorrow morning to submit my transfer request. I can take Felix out to play when I get back. You can use my car if you want to go out."

Clara's cool gaze swept over him.

"Why are you reporting to me? Are you a nanny or a housekeeper?"

"Whatever you want me to be. I don't mind," Rhys answered instantly.

Clara's brow tightened.

"Rhys, I wanted you off the front lines so you could be responsible for yourself and for Felix, not so you could appease me. Is there any point in just orbiting around me like this?"

"Taking care of you two is the greatest point."

As Clara listened, an image of him years ago, in his police uniform, saluting on a stage, flashed through her mind.

Back then, he had been proud, dazzling.
