The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 353

Back in her room, Clara walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out over the city. The Brighton City skyline was beautiful, a brilliant sea of lights.

She pressed her forehead against the cool glass and closed her eyes.

She really didn't understand Rhys.

Before, she had been the one chasing him, begging him just to look at her.

Now that she had stopped looking, had walked away, he was clinging to her like a madman, thrusting his belated love in her face, forcing her to see it, forcing her to accept it.

She truly didn't get it.

Did everything in the world have to run on his schedule? When he wanted to be cold, he was cold. Now that he wanted to be warm, was she just supposed to accept it with gratitude?

Her mind was a mess. She didn't want to be alone. Checking the time, she saw it was just past nine.

Ever since Emily Lane had let things slip and returned to Brighton City with Daniel Reed, she'd had a guilty conscience and hadn't dared to contact Clara.

Clara scrolled through her contacts for a moment, then dialed her number.

The call was answered instantly. Emily's voice was timid. "Clara? What's wrong?"

Clara said, "Nothing. I just missed you."

There was a second of silence on the other end.

"Something's wrong with you, Clara," Emily said with conviction, her voice no longer hesitant. "Why would you miss me for no reason? Where are you? Are you still in Heron Bay? Your voice sounds so off."

"I'm in Brighton City."

"..."

Emily's voice shot up an octave, making Clara's ear ache. "Brighton City?! Why didn't you tell me! When did you get here? Where are you staying? Why didn't you come to my place?"

Emily's usual barrage of questions came fast and furious. Clara quickly cut her off. "I just got here. I didn't want to be a bother, so I just found a hotel."

"Which one?"

Clara was quiet for two seconds, then answered, "The Harborview."

The previously chattering Emily suddenly went silent.

Harborview Hotel.

For both of them, it was the place where everything had fallen apart four years ago.

It was from here that Emily had called her, mocking her about Rhys taking another woman up in the elevator.

Then Clara had come.

And after that... the cold, damp underground parking garage.

That was the first time Clara had felt the terror of life draining from her body, and it was the single biggest regret of Emily's life.
