The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 336

Rhys sighed.

It was the first time Clara had ever seen that expression on his face.

He couldn't scold her, and he couldn't get rid of her. He was helpless against her.

That night, Rhys didn't leave her in the snow, nor did he actually drag her back to the station to sit on a cold bench.

He took her to a 24-hour convenience store near Ashton University and bought her some food, sitting beside her the whole time.

"Sit here and finish it. I'm going to the motel next door to see if they have any rooms."

Clara, taking a bite of a hot dog, pointed to his thermos. "Are you going to have some?"

Rhys glanced at the thermos in his hand. Under Clara's expectant gaze, he twisted the cap open and drank a mouthful, his face expressionless.

"Is it good?"

"It's terrible."

It really was terrible. There wasn't enough sugar, and he hated the taste of sweet fruit teas.

Clara knew it was bad herself, but she watched him frown and take one sip after another until it was all gone.

In that moment, watching the movement of his throat as he swallowed, watching the white mist of his breath, Clara thought to herself:

This is the man for me, for the rest of my life.

Even if he were a stone, I'd carry him in my pocket.

Rhys got her a room at the motel next door, using his own ID. He handed her the key card, walked her to the elevator, and left.

The next day, when Clara went back, she found the thermos washed clean and placed in the guard post, with a twenty-dollar bill tucked underneath it.

He had said she didn't need to pay him for the room, but he wasn't going to take advantage of her, either. He had paid for that cup of sweet tea in his own way.

Clara held the twenty-dollar bill, so furious she paced in circles, nearly grinding her teeth to dust.

So she spun around, marched to a pharmacy, and used the twenty dollars to buy a large pack of hand warmers, stuffing them all into the pockets of his police-issued winter coat.

And after that…

Rhys was finally caught. He became her boyfriend, and then her husband.
