His heavy footsteps echoed deliberately against the hardwood floor.
"When did you wake up?" Anthony walked straight over to the sofa and claimed the spot right next to Charlotte. His large hand slid possessively around her waist, his eyes overflowing with undisguised tenderness and affection.
"Just now," Charlotte replied absentmindedly, not even bothering to look up as she continued tapping away on her mobile game.
"Mhm." Anthony offered a faint smile before shifting his gaze away from his wife and toward the stranger sitting across from them. The warmth in his eyes vanished in a split second, replaced by a terrifying, bone-chilling frost.
Meeting Anthony's icy—almost murderous—glare, Queenie's heart violently skipped a beat. On her way here, she had read up on Asclepius's public background. She knew she had married the heir to Cabinda's most powerful family, Anthony, when she was barely twenty.
She had also discovered that this man was thirty. He was a whole decade older than Asclepius. Asclepius was so incredibly brilliant; how did she end up with...
"Ignore him and keep reading," Charlotte instructed coolly, noticing Queenie's sudden panic.
"Okay!" Queenie gave Charlotte a deeply admiring look, a radiant smile breaking out on her face as she happily returned to the research paper. But whenever she caught Anthony in her peripheral vision, her smile stiffened awkwardly.
Ten minutes later. Queenie had finished reading the paper and formed several insightful theories. She glanced up at Charlotte, who was still deeply engrossed in her mobile game. Her fingers flew gracefully across the screen as the rapid sounds of in-game kills filled the silence.
Queenie bit her lip, too intimidated to interrupt. Instead, she sat quietly in her seat, peeking up to observe her idol in awe. Asclepius was a genius on so many levels. Aside from her medical mastery, she held an array of powerful identities. It was absolutely mind-blowing!
"Finished?" Charlotte handed her phone over to Anthony with a casual, "Don't lose," before turning her attention to Queenie.
"I'm done." Queenie beamed at Charlotte, her eyes practically shining with pure hero-worship.
Anthony took the phone, shooting a cold, annoyed glance at the girl sitting across from them. The situation rubbed him the wrong way. Sure, she was just a girl, and he shouldn't be bothered by it. But still. Did she really have to smile like that? Her eyes were basically glued to his wife.
