Charlotte brought over the tray, eyes fixed on Anthony as she tried to fight off a yawn. “Anthony, honestly, if you keep acting cute, I might actually get mad.”
She’d never been the comforting type.
Now that Anthony had gotten what he wanted, he decided not to push his luck. He let it go.
By the time he finished eating, Charlotte was already curled up next to him, fast asleep in his arms.
He quietly put his bowl down, then gently shifted her so she’d be more comfortable. Under the soft glow of the lamp, he noticed the shadows under her eyes. His brows pulled together.
“What could possibly be so important that you’re working yourself into the ground?” he muttered.
He tucked the blanket around her, making sure she was covered, then grabbed his phone and stepped out onto the balcony.
After a moment, he called Dr. David.
“I know about what's going on with the Medical Association,” he said. Since Dr. David was clearly loyal to Lottie and would probably dodge the question, Anthony decided to get straight to the point. “She’s been completely swamped lately. I need to know how serious this is. If you won’t tell me, I’ll find out anyway.”
Dr. David went quiet for a second. “Well…”
He explained everything, carefully, step by step.
“The situation’s really bad. The best-case scenario is that testing and analysis help us find the cause. If that fails...”
“What happens then?”
Anthony’s grip on the phone tightened. His forehead creased with worry and he’d gone pale.
“The Medical Alliance has been asking Charlotte to go to Apex for on-site assessments over and over. My guess is, she hates being away from you. That’s why she’s been burying herself in research and meetings, trying to minimize any risk.”
Hearing that, Anthony glanced back at Charlotte sleeping deeply on the bed. He rubbed his tired face.
So that was it.
Lottie had been so distant lately because she was desperately searching for answers.
“The situation is getting worse,” Dr. David said, cutting back in. “There are more and more patients in Apex. It’s clear the environment there isn’t safe.”
“Charlotte’s a genetic mutant and she’s pregnant. Her immune system’s already weak. That place could be really dangerous for her.”
He paused. “Anthony, I’m telling you this so that if it all comes down to it, you can stop her.”
“She’d do anything to save people, especially those who are already struggling.”
