Our bedroom was already warm, lights dimmed to that soft amber glow Thoren always defaulted to when
we got back late. He kicked the door shut behind us and I peeled off my shoes one by one, toeing them toward the wall without grace.
But the second I reached for the tie at the hem of my hoodie, he asked casually-
“I saw Sabrina whisper to you before we left the dining hall.”
I paused. “Yeah. She told me Kael’s mystery man snuck out this morning after you guys left for the lab.”
He blinked. “Wait–what?”
I nodded, pulling the hoodie over my head and tossing it onto the bench. “Apparently he was gone by the
time the guards did their late–morning rounds. Quiet. Fast. Didn’t want to be seen.”
“Shit,” Thoren muttered. “So he wasn’t there when Kael got back.”
“Nope.”
He dragged a hand down his face. “Damn. I was hoping maybe they were still… I don’t know. Talking. Or at
least figuring things out.”
“I mean,” I said, sitting to yank off my socks, “do you think you should check on him? Just to make sure he’s okay?”
Thoren leaned against the dresser, arms crossed. “If he wanted to see anyone, he would’ve come to
dinner.”
“That’s fair,” I admitted. “Still sucks.”
“And for all we know, the guy left a note or something. All we have is a secondhand account of a silent departure. No context.”
“Yeah. True.” I stood and stretched, bones popping. “But I really hope he didn’t get ghosted with that stroke, poke, thank–you bloke one–night stand energy.”
Thoren’s head snapped toward me. “I’m sorry–what?”
I smirked. “You heard me.”
“Oh my fucking gods. Did you just make that up?”
“Pretty good, huh?” I grinned, starting to unbutton my shirt.
He stared like I’d just summoned lightning. “You’re terrifying.”
“And yet-“I let the shirt slide from my shoulders, reaching for my sleep tee on the bed.

But before I could grab it, Thoren snatched it out from under my fingers.
My head whipped toward him. “What the hell, wolf–boy?”
His eyes were hungry. Not metaphorically. Like he was debating whether to bite or beg.
“Shut up,” he growled, stepping closer. “I need you to answer this question.”
I backed up slowly. “Uh–huh…”

“Do you want me to fuck you…” Another step, his voice dropping like velvet smoke. “Or make love to you?”
My back hit the post of the bed and my breath caught.
“Because one of them is happening right now,” he said, circling me like prey. “And you can choose how I
give it to you.”
My lips parted, pulse kicking.
Then I grinned.
“Fuck me,” I said sweetly. “But you have to catch me first.”
I spun on my heel and ran.
He cursed behind me, but it was the kind of curse that was all teeth and amusement. I sprinted around the
edge of the bed, ducked behind the couch, laughing as I heard him circle the other way.
He was playing with me. Humoring me.
Big mistake.
1 juked left, then darted right, making him growl low in his throat.
“Cute,” he muttered. “You think you’re fast.”
“I know I’m fast,” I shot back, dodging behind the armchair.
But then he stopped.
No footsteps. No warning.
Just a sudden thump–and the sound of air rushing.
I turned just in time to see him leap over the sofa.
Before I could react, his hand caught my wrist and twisted it behind my back with delicious, unrelenting strength. He hauled me flush against his chest.
Then his other hand curled around my throat from behind.
Not choking–claiming.
“Is this what you wanted?” he murmured, voice a growl against my ear. “You wanted the big, bad wolf to chase you like a little bunny? Play with his food before he devours it?”

I whimpered.

His teeth skimmed my skin–then sank into the mark he’d saved my life with, right between my neck and shoulder.
Not hard enough to hurt.
Just enough to claim.
A jolt of sensation exploded down my spine, bond–fire erupting under my skin. My knees buckled at the rush of it. Sparks shot from the contact like I’d been plugged straight into him.
I gasped. “Fuck–Thoren-”
“Say it again,” he rasped, lips dragging across my throat.
“Fuck.”
“No.” He tightened his grip on my wrist, hips grinding into me from behind. “Say my name when you fall
apart. Say it when I make you beg. Say it when I split you open and ruin you.”
I was melting. Coming undone without a single stitch removed. But I wasn’t about to let him take all the
power.
Not yet.
So I twisted a little in his grasp, pushing my ass back against him just enough to feel how hard he was.
Then I dropped my voice into a purr.
“Answer this question,” I whispered, throwing his game right back at him. “Do you want me to be a good
girl who lets you do whatever you want to me…?”
His breath caught.
“Or do you want me to make you work for it?”
I turned my head, just enough to see the flash of heat in his eyes.
“Because one of those is happening tonight…” I smiled wickedly. “And you get to choose.”
A sound rumbled out of him that was halfway between a groan and a growl. His grip tightened, and in a blur he spun me, pressed me back against the wall with one thigh between mine and his body caging me
“I’m going to earn it,” he said roughly, his mouth brushing mine. “And then I’m going to own it.”
His thigh shifted, pressing against me through my leggings right where I was already aching.
“I’m going to work for it,” he growled, “so you remember every second of how I broke you.”
And then his mouth crashed down on mine.
