He gently cupped her cheek with the palm of his hand.

"Petty, just hold on a little longer."

—"Boss, Harris's bone marrow is a perfect match for Abacus. Given our current medical technology and the boy's fragile state, we can proceed with the transplant surgery in one week."

Franco's mind flashed back to the conversation he'd had with the lead specialist in the intensive care unit, right before Hans had confronted him.

Abacus's condition was incredibly complex. His bone marrow failure was entirely induced by the lethal poison, making his procedure vastly more dangerous than a standard transplant.

The doctor had warned him long ago to prepare for the worst—even if the marrow took, there was no guarantee the boy's battered body would survive the aftermath.

They were doing everything humanly possible, but after the surgery, it would all be up to Abacus to fight for his life.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated. It was the lead specialist again.

The doctor only ever called him directly when it was a critical update regarding Abacus.

Franco gripped the phone. With his free hand, he lifted Petty's fingers to his lips for one last kiss before answering the call and stepping out into the hallway.

He had been out of the room for less than a minute.

On the bed, Petty's eyes fluttered open. She slowly turned her head, her deadened gaze landing on the glass water pitcher resting on the nightstand.

In the hallway, the doctor was speaking. "Boss, I've just finalized the transplant protocols with the medical board. I've also reached out to that colleague I mentioned to you before—she's flying in tomorrow. With her expertise, our surgical team will be perfectly equipped."

The doctor had brought her up previously, but since they hadn't secured a viable donor at the time, the idea had been shelved.

"Understood," Franco replied smoothly. "Coordinate her arrival with Jay."

The moment he hung up, a terrifying crash echoed from inside the hospital room.

The unmistakable sound of shattering glass.

Franco's blood ran ice-cold. He and Hans sprinted into the room at the exact same time.
