Marlinie was at a loss for words. All she could do was look at her friend. Her heart ached with gratitude for her friend's openness and understanding.
...
Outside the hospital room, Ellinor and Theo listened to the conversation going on inside through the slightly ajar door. They then exchanged thoughtful glances.
Their trust and admiration for Bertha grew stronger. It was heartening to see her become such good friends with Marlinie.
Suddenly, the phone inside Ellinor's pocket vibrated.
It was on silent mode, and she saw that it was a call from Marissa.
Ellinor showed the call to Theo. Theo took a glance at it and said in a calm voice, "Answer it."
Their grandmother was probably worried about them being out so late. She must have decided to call and check on them.
Just as Ellinor was about to tell Marissa that they wouldn't be coming home tonight, Marissa's panicked voice came through the phone. "Ellinor, where are you and Theo? Come home quickly! There's...there's an emergency!"
Both Ellinor and Theo's expressions darkened. Ellinor asked anxiously, "What's happened? Grandma, what's wrong?"
Marissa was panting heavily on the other side. "Baber...Baber has just been taken by a strange man! I have sent people after him. You two need to come home quickly! We still haven't heard anything from them, and...and your grandpa and I don't know what to do..."
Baber was taken?
How could this happen? Ellinor stood up abruptly and rushed towards the elevator, not bothering to ask any more questions.
“Brother, Ellinor! Did you just get home too? Have you found Baber?”
Ellinor didn’t have time to answer her and rushed into the house.
Marissa and Putnam were anxiously waiting in the living room for any news. Tristan, Adrian, and Layla were also in the living room. They were surrounded by five maids and five butlers, ensuring they didn’t run around.
“Grandma! What about Baber? Did you find him?” Ellinor’s eyes were bloodshot from anxiety.
With tears streaming down her face, Marissa said, “Ellinor, I am sorry... I should have kept a closer eye on him. The people I sent to find him just returned. They couldn’t catch up. The man who took Baber quickly got into a van without a license plate. The van sped down the road and turned into a small alley. They lost sight of it.”
After hearing this, Ellinor felt the world spin around her. Thankfully, Theo was right behind her, and he caught her just in time.
