"You!" Zebulon choked on his own rage, a trembling finger pointed directly at her. "I never... I never should have taken you in! I should have sold you off to some remote wasteland where you'd be chained up and beaten to death!"
Vivica didn't even bother giving him a response. She exchanged a look with Joseph, and with his arm wrapped protectively around her shoulders, they took a detour around the bitter man.
Zebulon spun around, his chest heaving with indignation, but he was completely powerless to do anything.
Evelyn had already accepted her fate. She knew throwing a tantrum wouldn't work on Vivica, and she was too exhausted to put on an act. She simply turned and walked away.
It was all karma.
At her age, she was finally starting to believe that you reap what you sow.
Zebulon looked around frantically before dragging his feet to follow Evelyn. "You miserable bitch, wait for me! Help me up!"
"Evelyn, are you deaf?! Didn't you hear me talking to you?!"
Evelyn abruptly stopped and snapped her head back. "If you yell at me one more time, I'm walking right out that door and leaving you to rot!"
"..." Zebulon's face flushed with fury, but after weighing his options, he could only swallow his anger in silence.
He had late-stage diabetes, and his body was shutting down from a myriad of chronic complications. He couldn't even manage his basic daily needs without help. He literally couldn't afford to get on Evelyn's bad side.
Inside the hospital, Joseph didn't try to comfort Vivica until they were heading upstairs. "Don't let him get to you. Judging by how he looks, he's seriously ill. Karma always comes around. He won't be causing trouble for much longer."
Vivica nodded, looking up at him. "Don't worry, I'm fine. Seeing him like that actually felt like closure. It really is karma."
If there truly was a universal balance of cause and effect, she was grateful for it. If good deeds were rewarded and evil punished, then all the charity work she'd done would surely bring good luck to Chaim.
Joseph's phone suddenly buzzed. He pulled it out and let out a soft scoff. "It's Harvey. He's probably getting impatient because we aren't there yet."
