After Joseph left the hospital room, he didn’t go upstairs to check on Chaim. Instead, he went straight down to his car.
He sat in the driver's seat without starting the engine, his mind a whirlwind of turmoil. He pulled out his phone, his thumb stroking the smooth screen. He wanted to call Vivica, but he knew he couldn't tell her the truth just yet.
It had been over twenty years, and Vivica was just an infant back then, with no memory of the suffering she had endured. But whenever he pictured the scene Hillary had described, his heart clenched in a painful spasm.
His work had exposed him to all sorts of people, and he had long since witnessed the darkest sides of human nature, cultivating an unshakable composure. People often saw him as cold, lacking empathy, and unnervingly rational. He, too, had believed that nothing could stir his emotions so profoundly or occupy his thoughts so relentlessly.
But today had broken that resolve.
It was only in this moment that Joseph suddenly realized his feelings for Vivica ran far deeper than he had ever imagined.
When you really love someone, you don’t just hurt for what they’re going through now—you hurt for everything they’ve been through before, too.
An intense longing to see Vivica, to hold her tight, washed over him. His heart ached for her.
After sitting in silence for a while, he finally regained his composure. As he started the car and drove away from the hospital, he decided to call her after all—not to reveal the truth about her past, but for a different reason.
At the office, Vivica was busy when her phone rang. The call was a surprise.
“What’s up? Is everything okay?”
Joseph’s voice was low and unusually gentle. “Are you busy for lunch? If not, let’s go out and eat.”
“Lunch together?” Vivica was puzzled by his strange tone. “Is there something you need to tell me?”
“No, I just happened to be meeting a client near your office. I’m done now, so I thought I’d ask,” Joseph said, inventing an excuse to hide his unusual behavior.
