“You know that saying? A man is most attractive when he’s solving problems. Your charm has far surpassed your good looks.”
Vivica’s words sounded like a playful attempt at flattery. But in reality, she was using the guise of a joke to speak her true feelings. She found it difficult to say such things when she was being serious.
Joseph, keeping one hand on the wheel, used the other to cover his nose and chin, clearly trying to hide a smile that was too wide for his composed image.
Vivica watched his expression. “Was that enough? I can keep going if you’d like.”
“That’s enough. Save some for next time,” Joseph said earnestly.
Vivica’s mood, which had been quite gloomy, lifted considerably after his teasing.
When they arrived at her office building, Joseph turned to look at her.
“I’ll come pick you up tonight. If I can’t get away, I’ll send someone. If Raymond tries to contact you, just ignore him.”
He had told her all this last night, but he couldn’t help repeating himself.
But after a night to process everything, Vivica felt less resistant to the idea. She fell silent for a moment, then looked at Joseph. “If I don’t have to work late tonight, and if they still haven’t left…”
She trailed off, hesitating.
Joseph asked, “You want to see them?”
“I think… maybe I should meet them and clear the air. I’ll just say it’s a coincidence that I look like her, and that’s all. As long as I refuse a DNA test, they won’t have any concrete proof.”
Vivica figured that if she kept avoiding them, they would only become more persistent. It was better to meet them, state her position clearly, and refuse outright, so they would finally give up.
Joseph considered it for a moment, then nodded. “Whatever you decide. If you want to see them, I’ll go with you.”
“Okay. We’ll talk about it tonight, then.”
This time, before getting out of the car, Vivica leaned over on her own and gave him a light kiss on the corner of his lips.
“Thank you, Mr. Baird,” she said softly, then turned and walked into the building.
After watching her disappear inside, Joseph didn’t head to his law firm. Instead, he drove back to the hospital. On the way, he made a phone call.
By the time he arrived, he already knew which room Raymond’s aunt was in.
In his typical fashion, he preferred taking the offensive rather than waiting passively. He planned to meet this woman alone first to see what kind of person she was.
If she genuinely had a difficult past and was now truly remorseful, he would help persuade Vivica.
But if she was anything like Zebulon and Evelyn, a meeting would be pointless, and he would find a way to run them out of Riverdale.
