Vivica looked up at Joseph. "Raymond... he's outside."
Joseph's expression instantly darkened. He shot up from the sofa and strode toward her. "Why is he at the hospital? Was he following you?"
Vivica's mind was in turmoil, reeling from the terrifying prospect of meeting her birth mother, and she didn't answer right away.
"Don't be afraid. I'll go see what's going on," Joseph reassured her before yanking the door open and stepping out.
Raymond was standing in the hallway, just a few feet from their room. Seeing the tall, imposing man storm out with a furious look on his face, Raymond intuitively knew, even without a formal introduction, that this was Vivica's new husband.
"You must be Mr. Baird. I'm Ray—"
Raymond began to introduce himself, raising a hand, but before he could finish, Joseph closed the distance like an avenging angel and swung his fist.
Caught completely off guard, Raymond felt a brutal force connect with his jaw. Sharp pain exploded through him. The impact sent him stumbling backward until he crashed into a row of chairs in the hallway, creating a loud, scraping noise.
Joseph advanced, grabbing him by the collar and hauling him to his feet.
"Mr. Baird, you've misunderstood. I—" Raymond tried to explain, but Joseph gave him no chance, shoving him hard against the wall.
It was late, and the entire ward, where patients and their families were trying to rest, was quiet. This was the VIP wing, home to the wealthy and influential. Hearing the commotion, several doors opened.
"What's all the noise? This is a hospital! Don't you know you're supposed to be quiet?"
"Exactly! If you're going to fight, take it outside!"
Nurses and other staff rushed over. They were startled to see it was Joseph. "Mr. Baird... sir, what did this man do to offend you?"
Joseph ignored them, his face a mask of cold fury as he warned Raymond, "Stay away from Vivica. If I see you near her again, I'll do this every single time."
At that moment, it didn't matter who this man was. He had dared to stalk his wife, and Joseph would have punched him even if he were the king himself.
"Mr. Baird, you've got it all wrong. It's a complete coincidence," Raymond explained hastily. "My aunt fell ill and was admitted to this hospital this evening for some tests..."
Vivica heard the crash from inside the room and knew something was wrong. She rushed out to see Joseph pinning Raymond against the wall, his arm pressed against Raymond's throat, causing his face to turn red.
"Calm down!" Vivica spun around, pressing herself into Joseph's chest to hold him back.
But Raymond was just as stubborn. Despite Joseph's fury, he was determined to finish. "The fact that you refuse to meet them means you know it's true. My aunt and uncle are most likely your biological parents. You must hate them for losing you, and that's why you won't see them. But they had their reasons..."
Before Raymond could say more, a doctor who had summoned security had him forcibly removed. As he was dragged away, Vivica finally let out a breath of relief. The crowd of onlookers muttered among themselves before dispersing back to their rooms at the staff's urging.
Joseph's tense posture relaxed, and he looked down at Vivica. She took his hand, her brow furrowed. "Newton's third law, remember? You hurt him, but you hurt yourself too."
His fingers were long and elegant, but the back of his hand was already red and would likely be swollen by morning.
"It's nothing. It'll be fine in a bit," Joseph said dismissively, glancing at his hand before pulling out his phone to make a call.
Vivica listened as he instructed Roderic to send several bodyguards to the hospital immediately. They were to work in shifts, guarding both ends of the hallway on their floor.
Vivica said nothing, but she knew it wouldn't make much of a difference.
