Raymond spotted her but couldn't be certain; it was just a fleeting glimpse of her back. By the time he hurried to the elevator, the doors had already closed and it was ascending.
He scanned the floor directory on the wall and noticed that the eighteenth floor housed the hematology department. He recalled Zavier mentioning that Vivica's son had leukemia, which fell under hematology. So, the familiar figure he'd just seen must have been Vivica.
A surge of excitement coursed through him. What a coincidence to run into her at the hospital!
Still, it was late, and her child would be sleeping. It wasn't right to disturb them tonight.
When Vivica returned to the hospital room, the main lights were off, leaving only a soft glow from the bathroom. The room was dim but not completely dark.
Joseph was sitting on the sofa, looking at his phone. He glanced up as she entered and asked quietly, "Did you get something good to eat?"
"We went to a food truck outside the hospital for some barbecue," Vivica replied, walking over to the bed to check on Chaim before turning back to Joseph. "I was already full, so I didn't have much. Quintina had two beers and a bunch of skewers, though."
"Is Quintina heartbroken over a breakup?" Joseph asked casually, his eyes still on his phone as he replied to work messages.
"Not at all," Vivica said with a small laugh, shaking her head.
With Chaim asleep, they kept their voices low, and she sat down next to Joseph. "She's been single for over two years. Says she'd rather wait for the right man than settle, so she hasn't been dating."
"So she was drowning her sorrows for another reason?"
"Something at work."
Vivica knew Joseph wasn't usually interested in other people's problems, but it was still early, and neither of them was ready for sleep. Sitting in silence felt more awkward, so she elaborated a little.
