The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 385

“I, uh, I already had dinner,” Vivica answered.

But then it occurred to her that he had been busy all evening and probably hadn’t eaten yet. She quickly corrected herself. “Actually, I just had takeout, and it wasn’t very good. I am a bit hungry.”

Joseph’s voice was warm. “I’ll bring some supper home, then. Come back soon.”

“Okay.”

After they hung up, Vivica’s mood lifted instantly. In her four years with Fletcher, she had never been treated with such consideration. In fact, Fletcher would often come home late and expect her to go to the kitchen to make him food. It was as if his authority as head of the household could only be asserted by ordering his wife around after a long day.

Joseph was clearly different. A truly successful and magnanimous man never needed to seek his dignity or validation from a woman. On the contrary, because such men were strong and secure enough, they were more inclined to be a woman’s safe harbor, always ready to support her.

When Vivica arrived at the hospital, Chaim was already getting ready for bed. The little boy was surprised to see his mother.

The family suite was spacious, with extra beds set up for Sheridan and Melanie to sleep comfortably. Sheridan was reading his grandson a bedtime story, while Melanie was reading a book with her glasses on.

Seeing Vivica, Melanie spoke in her gentle, calm voice. “Now that you’re done with work, you should go home and rest. Why tire yourself out coming all the way here? Chaim is being good, we can handle it.”

“I know you and Dad can handle it,” Vivica said. “It’s just that Joseph isn’t done with work yet, and I’d be bored at home by myself, so I thought I’d swing by and check on you all.”

She was careful to say “you all,” including Sheridan and Melanie in her concern, not just her son.

“Alright, we know you’re a thoughtful daughter-in-law, worried we’d get tired.”

And it was true. Vivica worried that Sheridan and Melanie might not mention if they were feeling unwell while taking care of Chaim, so she felt more at ease seeing for herself that they were doing fine.

“Mommy, are you and Daddy having a date night tonight?” Chaim, true to form, dropped a bombshell.

Vivica was already feeling self-conscious, and being asked such a question by her young son made her smile falter.

“Uh… you should get some sleep. Grandpa is tired from playing with you all day. One story is enough,” Vivica said, trying to change the subject.

But the little boy was persistent. “Mommy, what do you do on a date night? Won’t you be bored without me?”

Vivica was even more embarrassed by her son’s questions.

“Chaim, Mommy and Daddy work hard. By the time they get home, it’s very late. They just shower and go straight to sleep. Then they have to get up for work again in the morning. There’s no time to be bored.”

Seeing her daughter-in-law’s discomfort, Melanie stepped in to answer for her. The explanation was perfectly proper and, for the most part, true. But for the adults in the room, the word “sleep” carried a much deeper meaning, and Vivica’s ears turned redder still.

Fortunately, Chaim finally stopped asking questions.

Vivica’s phone rang. It was Joseph again.
