As Sheridan and Melanie drove Chaim back to their hospital, Joseph called. Vivica had told him what was happening, and he wanted to make sure Fletcher hadn’t tried to pull any tricks.

“There was no scheme,” Sheridan reported. “He just wanted Chaim to see his father one last time. We left right after.”

Melanie immediately took the phone from her husband. “Joseph, let me tell you, it’s a good thing you and Vivica got married when you did. I could see the regret all over that man’s face. He definitely wants her back. If his father passed away and he played the sympathy card, Vivica might have softened and given in.”

Melanie was convinced that their getting married that morning had been an exceptionally wise decision.

Though Joseph was confident Vivica wouldn’t be so easily swayed, he agreed that marrying her sooner rather than later had brought him peace of mind.

Knowing Chaim was safe, Joseph hung up and returned to his work.

Around four in the afternoon, Vivica received a text from an unknown number.

[My father passed away. It was peaceful. Thank you for letting Chaim be with him.]

Vivica knew it was from Fletcher. Reading the message, she felt a pang of sadness. For some reason, her thoughts drifted to Raymond’s aunt and uncle, and she was struck by how close death suddenly felt.

Sheridan had said that when someone reaches that point, all grudges should be put aside. Her resolve wavered, and she found herself wanting to pay her respects.

After a few moments of jumbled thoughts, Vivica focused, opened her banking app, and transferred ten thousand dollars to Fletcher.

Ten thousand dollars wouldn't be enough for an elaborate funeral, but it was more than sufficient for a simple, dignified service. As his former daughter-in-law, she felt she had fulfilled her obligations.
