The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 346

After so many years, without a key witness, it would be difficult to prove whether Evelyn was telling the truth.

However, in Joseph’s judgment, her story seemed credible at this point. He turned back to Vivica, his gaze soft and full of sympathy. "Is there anything else you want to ask?" he asked gently.

Vivica looked up at him. Though her expression was composed, the heartbreak and chill in her eyes were hard to look at.

Feeling the coldness of her fingers, Joseph shifted his hand, wanting to warm them.

Vivica snapped back to reality and shook her head absently. "I'm fine."

She turned to Evelyn, her eyes turning cold. "Continue."

Evelyn threw up her hands. "There's nothing more to say. We really didn't know anything else. We were scared the story would get out, so we left the village quickly and came to Riverdale to find work. Eventually, we just settled here. A few years later, I got pregnant for real and had Zahar."

As she spoke, a smile crept onto Evelyn's face, clearly believing that the old folk tale had actually worked—that adopting a child could truly bring you one of your own.

Seeing her smile, a surge of intense hatred welled up inside Vivica. "If you bought me, then why did you lie and say you found me at a train station?"

Evelyn’s eyes darted away guiltily. "I never thought you'd find out you weren't our biological daughter," she stammered. "And I knew human trafficking was illegal! I was afraid we'd go to jail if the truth came out... so I had to say you were found."

Vivica let out a cold laugh. "Fine. Great. Since you knew from the start that human trafficking is a crime, you'll do exactly as I say. Otherwise, I can call the police at any time and have you thrown in jail, too."
