“Watching you eat like that has ruined my appetite,” Vivica said bluntly.
Evelyn’s face hardened. “You’re disgusted by me? I raised you, and now that you’ve married into money, you’re ashamed of me. What an ungrateful brat!”
Vivica didn’t bother to argue. She was disgusted by Evelyn, and she knew Joseph was too. If she started eating, Joseph would be left sitting there alone, so she decided to wait with him.
“Now that you’ve eaten your fill, I need you to listen to me,” Vivica said, sitting up straighter, her expression cool and serious.
Seeing a basket of creamy dinner rolls being served, Evelyn grabbed one and stuffed it in her mouth while asking the waiter for four takeout boxes. Then she glanced at Vivica and rolled her eyes. “I have a feeling this isn’t going to be good for me.”
Vivica got straight to the point, dropping a bombshell. “I think my birth parents have found me.”
Evelyn, with a roll in one hand and a glass of water in the other, choked on the water she had just sipped, spraying it across the table.
“What… cough, cough… what did you say?” she sputtered, her eyes wide with disbelief as she tried to suppress a hacking cough.
Vivica remained calm. “They sent someone to find me, but I don’t want to meet them. I need you to help me.”
In truth, Raymond had likely come to Riverdale on his own accord; his aunt and uncle probably didn't even know. But Vivica saw no need to explain the details to Evelyn. A simple summary would suffice.
Evelyn was still coughing, her face flushed and her eyes filled with panic. “Your birth parents… who are they? Where are they from? How… how did they find you?”
