His playful threat made Vivica smile. “Alright, I get it. I won't hide things from you anymore.”
She kept her promise. At three that afternoon, when she saw Zavier hurrying out of the department, she immediately sent a message to Joseph.
[Zavier just left. I think Raymond must have arrived.]
Since Raymond's trip wasn't for business, it wouldn't be appropriate for him to come to the office. The walls had ears, and if colleagues overheard their conversation, the resulting gossip could be damaging.
Joseph was in a meeting with a client. He glanced at the message and sent a brief reply: [If you don't want to see him, just ignore it. I'll pick you up after work.]
Vivica didn't want to deal with it, but she couldn't concentrate on her work. Raymond had come all this way; he wasn't going to leave without seeing her. She doubted she'd be able to just walk out at the end of the day.
Her anxiety grew as five o'clock approached. When her phone suddenly rang, the sound made her jump.
She checked the caller ID: it was Melanie. That morning, since both she and Joseph had to work, Chaim had said he missed his grandparents, so they had the driver take him to their house.
Melanie's voice was filled with concern. “Vivica! Chaim has a fever. We're on our way to the hospital now. You and Joseph should come over after work.”
Hearing her son was sick, Vivica panicked. “How is he? Is it a low-grade fever or a high one? Any other symptoms?”
Vivica was filled with self-blame. It had been snowing and very cold for the past few days, but yesterday, on a whim, she'd taken Chaim out to build a snowman in the backyard. They had played until they were both sweating. Even though she'd quickly brought him inside for a warm bath and a change of clothes, his delicate health meant he had probably still caught a chill.
“It started as a low-grade fever, so we thought maybe the heat in the house was just too high. But then he started getting lethargic. We took his temperature and it was 102.2. We called the family doctor, who listened to his chest and heard some rattling, so he advised us to take him to the hospital.”
