“Ah—!”
Vivica let out a startled cry. She quickly clapped a hand over her mouth, mindful of the sleeping child beside them. But her wide, terrified eyes betrayed her shock.
Lying on his side, Joseph’s breath was a warm caress against her ear. He chuckled, his voice low and intimate. “What are you screaming for? Am I that scary?”
Vivica’s heart hammered against her ribs. With his hot breath tickling her ear, a wave of indescribable heat washed over her. “Didn’t you say we were just sleeping tonight?” she forced herself to remain calm, whispering the question.
“Yes, and this is sleeping,” Joseph’s voice was even lower than hers, almost a murmur. “What did you think I was going to do?”
Vivica couldn't relax. She knew men ran hot, a stark contrast to women who often had cold hands and feet in the winter. Men were like furnaces. But Joseph’s heat was beyond anything she’d imagined. It felt like molten lava, threatening to melt her completely. Uncomfortable, she held her breath for a moment before squirming in his arms, trying to find a more comfortable position.
“If you keep moving like that,” Joseph’s self-control was fraying at the edges. He nibbled gently on her earlobe, his voice a low, husky threat, “tonight really will be about more than just sleeping.”
A shiver ran down Vivica’s side, and she instinctively flinched away.
Joseph smiled to himself. He was just discovering how sensitive a woman’s body could be, like a startled rabbit. The woman in his arms was soft, fragrant, her very presence an intoxicating challenge to his willpower.
After enduring for what felt like an eternity, he decided to give in. “Vivica…” he whispered her name.
“Mm?” she trembled, turning her head to look at him.
