Vivica pressed her lips together, the tips of her ears turning red. “I just didn’t want anyone to see…” she mumbled.
Joseph shot her a look, trying to keep his temper in check. If he’d known that coming all this way to see her would only get him this kind of reception, he wouldn’t have bothered.
The car fell silent, the atmosphere growing heavy. Vivica could feel the pressure building, a clear sign of his displeasure. She glanced at him again.
“You can’t really blame me,” she said, breaking the silence with a soft, complaining tone. “You came all the way here for a business trip and didn’t even mention it. We were on a video call for so long just last night. This surprise attack was… terrifying.”
Joseph shifted in his seat, tugging at his suit jacket. “Just learning from the best, aren’t I?” he said coldly. “You went on a business trip and didn’t tell me either.”
“I knew you were going to say that,” she muttered.
“Then why did you ask?” he retorted.
Roderic gripped the steering wheel, breaking into a cold sweat. His boss was something else. He’d clearly missed her so much that he’d raced over here late at night, only to adopt this attitude the moment they met. He wanted to say something to smooth things over but feared he’d just become collateral damage. He decided to stay quiet.
The car fell silent once more.
Joseph was still fuming over the embarrassing moment of being shoved back into the car, while Vivica was anxiously wondering what the rest of the night held in store. Lost in their own thoughts, neither of them spoke.
After glancing in the rearview mirror several times as he drove aimlessly, Roderic finally decided to risk it. “Mr. Baird, are we heading back to the hotel now, or should I go somewhere else?”
They had already booked a hotel before arriving. It was a bit of a drive, about half an hour away. Joseph was particular about his accommodations, and this hotel was one of the most luxurious in Sydville—their usual choice when visiting for business.
Roderic had no idea what his boss was planning, or if he intended for Ms. Lynn to stay with him tonight, so he had to ask, even if it meant taking the heat.
His question shattered the suffocating silence in the car. Both Joseph and Vivica let out a quiet breath, the tension in their chests easing slightly.
Joseph decided it was pointless to get into a squabble with a woman. After taking a deep breath to calm himself, he turned to look at Vivica. “Are you hungry?” he asked, his voice low.
Sensing the shift in his mood, Vivica seized the opportunity to smooth things over. She nodded. “A little…”
In truth, she had eaten a hearty dinner and wasn't hungry at all, but she worried that if she said no, he would take her straight to the hotel.
The man glanced at his watch and frowned slightly. “It’s after midnight. Let’s go get some soup.”
