The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 264

“Okay, I’ll be there on time,” Vivica nodded.

“Then you should head home early today and spend some time with your son. See you tomorrow.”

Zavier really was a good boss. Even after she had rejected him rather bluntly, he hadn't made things awkward and treated her with the same professional courtesy as always.

After Zavier left, a colleague leaned over and whispered, “Mr. Fulton seems like a great guy, doesn't he? I heard you’re divorced. Why not give him a shot? You were alumni, so you already know each other pretty well.”

Vivica shook her head quickly. “You just said it yourself, I’m divorced. I’m not good enough for him.”

“Times have changed,” her colleague insisted. “Divorced women are in high demand these days.”

Vivica just smiled and continued packing up her things, ready to head home.

...

That evening, Joseph didn't come over, clearly busy with work as he’d said.

During dinner, Vivica told her son about her business trip.

Chaim understood what that meant. Fletcher used to go on business trips all the time, disappearing for days.

The little boy pouted, his lip trembling. “But what if I miss you at night and can’t sleep?”

Vivica stroked his hair gently. “You love it when your uncle tells you stories, right? While I’m away, he can stay with you and tell you all the stories you want.”

Chaim didn't say anything, which she took as a silent agreement.

Later that night, after tucking her son into bed, Vivica quietly packed her suitcase. Sydville was much warmer than Riverdale, so she didn't need any heavy clothes. A single carry-on was enough for everything, and she finished quickly.

Lying in bed, she looked at her son sleeping beside her, a knot of anxiety tightening in her stomach. He had been relatively stable the past few days, so leaving him at the family estate for a few days should be fine. A week after she returned, he would be admitted to the hospital again for his next round of treatment.

The thought of the pain from chemotherapy made her eyes well up with tears as she gazed at his small face.

Joseph’s proposal was more urgent than ever. If they couldn't find a match in the national bone marrow registry, they had to create their own solution. There were no guarantees, but it was another ray of hope.

Clasping her son's hand, she closed her eyes and replayed every moment she had spent with Joseph. Being away from him for a few days might give her the clarity she needed to sort out their complicated relationship. Hopefully, by the time she returned, she would be ready to face what was to come.

At eleven o'clock that night, Joseph finally finished his work.

On the drive home, he glanced at his phone, an annoyed frown creasing his brow. He’d been too busy to check it all evening, but Vivica certainly hadn't been. Yet there were no calls, not even a single text message from her. Their relationship felt even more distant now than when they were practically strangers.
