“That’s their problem, not yours.”
“I know, but I want to wait and see when the ambulance arrives.”
Joseph didn’t argue. Instead, he asked, “Did you two finish eating?”
“We were halfway through.”
“Have Roderic take you to Sherman’s. I’ll meet you there now.”
Vivica was surprised. “Are you done with work?”
“Yes,” Joseph said. “I was about to head back to the firm, but with everything that happened, I’m worried. Let's eat together. I’m still hungry anyway.”
Even though he had sent men to protect her and Chaim, Joseph needed to see for himself that they were alright.
“Okay.”
Before they could hang up, Roderic turned from the driver's seat. “Ma’am, look.”
Vivica looked out the window just as an ambulance, sirens blaring, screeched to a halt in front of the restaurant. Paramedics leaped out and rushed inside.
A few moments later, they emerged with Dylan on a stretcher. Fletcher and Loretta followed close behind, their faces pale with panic as they climbed into the ambulance.
Riley was the last to exit, leading her daughter by the hand. She stood frozen at the restaurant entrance, her expression lost and bewildered as she watched the ambulance speed away.
Vivica pulled her gaze away. “Let’s go to Sherman’s.”
“Right away.”
...
By the time Vivica arrived with Chaim, the little boy was so exhausted he was practically asleep.
