Standing to the side, Vivica felt a knot of anxiety as she listened to Joseph. He had handled her divorce case, and once that was settled, his involvement should have ended. But now, here he was, dealing with the messy aftermath and arguing with Fletcher on her behalf. She felt terribly guilty.
“Look, arguing about this now is pointless,” Joseph said into the phone. “Vivica has custody. What she says goes.”
Fletcher, knowing he couldn't win a debate against a renowned lawyer, swallowed his frustration and shifted the topic back to his business. “Fine, let’s not talk about that. But on what grounds are you intercepting my company’s orders? I haven’t done anything to you. This is pure retaliation!”
Joseph scoffed. “Mr. Sanford, you have a short memory. You broke one of my ribs, yet you claim you haven’t done anything to me?”
“That was… I wasn’t aiming for you! You got hurt playing the hero.”
“Mr. Sanford, you should be thankful I played the hero that day. If that chair had landed on Vivica’s head, you might have become a murderer. Even if she’d survived, you’d be facing seven or eight years in prison for aggravated assault. I saved you from a jail sentence. Is this the gratitude I get?”
Listening to this, Vivica couldn’t help but admire Joseph’s verbal gymnastics. It was pure sophistry.
On the other end of the line, Fletcher was rendered speechless. After a moment, he stammered, his argument losing all conviction, “That’s… that’s a separate issue. You promised to let me go, and now you’re doing this.”
“I’m not retaliating. You’re the one who kept insisting you would appeal, so I had to find a way to keep you busy. As long as you behave, I won’t interfere with your company’s operations after the appeal period has passed.”
Vivica looked up at him, shocked. “Why would you admit that to him?”
What if Fletcher was recording the call? He would have evidence.
Joseph didn’t answer, simply offering her a reassuring glance.
Fletcher finally understood. So that was the reason!
“Joseph, you… you’re abusing your power! You’re a lawyer yourself, yet you resort to such despicable tactics. You’re knowingly breaking the law!” Fletcher accused, his voice filled with rage.
But Joseph remained perfectly calm. “Business competition is transparent. If your company lost orders, you should examine your own shortcomings. Is your technology flawed, or are your prices unfair? I haven't used any illegal methods. You’re welcome to investigate.”
Hearing his explanation, Vivica immediately relaxed. Of course. This was Joseph Baird. He would never do anything that could be used against him. She had underestimated him.
“Joseph, you…”
“Mr. Sanford, instead of wasting time arguing with me, perhaps you should be looking for new clients. Wouldn't you agree?”
