His innocent remark sent a wave of laughter through the room.
Sheridan immediately promised his grandson, “From now on, Chaim, every day can be this happy!”
Watching the pure, unadulterated joy on her son’s face, Vivica’s gaze instinctively found Joseph’s, and she sent him a look of profound gratitude.
…
Before the party was over, Chaim began to tire. He still wasn’t fully recovered, and even after being discharged from the hospital, he needed plenty of rest.
Vivica carried him out of the sunroom and took him upstairs to bed.
Lying in bed, Chaim blinked his big eyes and whispered, “Mommy, I really like this grandpa and grandma’s house. It’s better than my old grandpa’s house.”
Vivica’s smile was tinged with bitterness. The mention of his “old grandpa” brought a sigh to her lips. Today was her son’s third birthday, and not a single person from the Sanford family had called or sent a message to acknowledge it.
Whatever grievances the adults had, they shouldn’t have let it affect a child. They had once been family, and before the divorce, she had worked hard to maintain harmony among them all. But now that she and Fletcher were separated, it was as if they had severed all ties, completely ignoring their own grandson on his birthday.
Seeing the slightly cautious look in her son’s eyes, Vivica understood what he was thinking. He felt a little guilty for “abandoning” his old grandfather, yet he couldn’t deny his true feelings—he simply liked his new one better.
She gently stroked his cheek. “Mommy thinks this grandpa and grandma are the best, too. If you like it here, you can visit often.”
“Okay,” Chaim nodded, then added out of the blue, “Mommy, you should have another grandbaby for Grandpa and Grandma!”
Vivica froze, completely bewildered. “Who told you that? Or did you think of it yourself?”
