The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 196

Seething, she pushed herself off his bed and stalked back to her own. Just as she was about to lie down, another wave of indignation washed over her. She shot a glare across the space between them and sneered, "I'm sure you're an expert, Mr. Baird. You must have a list of ex-girlfriends a mile long."

Joseph had assumed her silent retreat meant the end of it. He was surprised, and a little amused, that she had been stewing on a comeback.

He turned his head, looking at her rigid figure a few feet away, and a wry smile touched his lips. "You said you were going to take care of me, and then you practically threw yourself on top of me. It was an accident. Why are you so bent out of shape?"

"You're the one who made it personal!" Vivica shot back, her brain finally rebooting and her retorts becoming sharper.

In the darkness, Joseph's brow furrowed. He kept his eyes on her and had the distinct feeling she was on the verge of tears. Was it really that serious?

The sharp words he was about to say died on his lips. The thought that a woman would be driven to tears by his kiss—not out of excitement, or shyness, but out of anger—was deeply unsettling. Was he really that repulsive to her?

Seeing that he had fallen silent, Vivica finally lay down, turning her back to him.

Joseph remained propped up on his elbows, his gaze fixed on her silhouette for a long time, his thoughts churning.
