Fletcher stood frozen, muttering to himself, "Don't tell me her family did that to her?"
"What do you know?" Gavin asked, his eyes narrowing.
Fletcher’s mind flashed back a few days. He had intentionally let it slip to Zebulon Lynn that Vivica would get tens of millions from the divorce, turning her into a rich woman overnight. He remembered the shock and excitement in Zebulon's voice over the phone. Knowing the Lynn family, they would have undoubtedly gone to Vivica demanding an exorbitant sum of money. It seemed Vivica had refused, and they had beaten her for it.
A slow, cruel smile spread across Fletcher’s face. "How satisfying. Being beaten like that by your own family… The emotional scars probably hurt more than the physical ones, don't you think?"
Gavin, piecing together the situation from Fletcher’s muttering, couldn’t hold back his disgust. "You were married for four years. She went through hell to give you a child. How can you be so heartless?"
Fletcher shot him a disdainful look. "You're my lawyer. Whose side are you on?"
"If I wasn't curious to see Joseph Baird in action, I wouldn't have taken this case for all your damn money," Gavin stated bluntly.
Fletcher was left speechless.
When the court session began, the judge was equally taken aback to see Vivica in a wheelchair, her face bruised and swollen. The initial filing had mentioned domestic violence, including group assault, which had led to police involvement. Seeing Vivica's injuries now, the judge naturally concluded they were the result of that abuse.
During the arguments, Gavin, ever the professional, did his best to mitigate Fletcher’s losses, highlighting his contributions to the household over the years. But it was a futile effort against the mountain of evidence Joseph presented: the deliberate transfer of marital assets, the infidelity and betrayal of his family, the abandonment of his sick child, and the vicious domestic abuse. Fletcher’s minor contributions paled in comparison to his long list of transgressions.
Typically, divorce cases required two hearings. The first was usually for mediation, with the judge encouraging reconciliation. If one party remained adamant, a second hearing would be scheduled, where the divorce was almost always granted.
But this time was different. Firstly, there was Joseph's influence. Secondly, the evidence against Fletcher was so infuriating—especially the video of the assault—that it stirred a sense of righteous anger in the judge. Consequently, the judge delivered the verdict on the spot, granting the divorce.
Vivica sat in her wheelchair, a massive weight lifting from her shoulders as she listened to the judgment. The more than four years of marriage had ended in a messy, abrupt fashion. On the way to the courthouse, she had been filled with sorrow. Now, all she felt was relief. It was as if a heavy chain had shattered, and her soul was suddenly light and free.
Although Fletcher knew the odds were stacked against him, the reality of being stripped of all his assets sent him into a tailspin. "I object! I'm going to appeal!" he yelled, leaping to his feet in a furious outburst.
