"Of course," Vivica said, relieved by her son's understanding.
After the doctor finished his rounds, Chad arrived to take Chaim for breakfast, and a moment later, a maid delivered Vivica's meal. Everything was orchestrated with a seamless efficiency that made her and her son feel like they were already part of the Baird family.
Dr. Warren, Chaim's physician, lingered after the maid had left, his expression serious as he turned to Vivica.
A knot of dread tightened in Vivica's stomach. "Dr. Warren, is something wrong with Chaim?" she asked.
He nodded grimly. "Based on our current treatment plan, his condition hasn't worsened, but it also hasn't improved as we'd hoped."
Vivica's face fell, though she tried to cling to the silver lining—at least it wasn't getting worse. She forced a smile. "Maybe if we continue with the chemotherapy, things will get better."
"He's so young, Vivica. His organs are still developing," the doctor explained gently. "Long-term chemotherapy will have significant side effects. Besides impacting his growth, it could cause irreversible damage to his central nervous system. Over time, the chemo will also become less effective…"
Dr. Warren's eyes were filled with sympathy. The agony of chemotherapy was difficult for an adult to endure, let alone a small child.
Vivica fell silent, her eyes welling with tears.
"Dr. Warren, isn't there another way?" she pleaded. "During the consultation, you mentioned a bone marrow transplant…"
"Yes, that's what I wanted to talk to you about," he confirmed. "Given the current results, it's unlikely that chemotherapy alone will be enough to eradicate the leukemia cells. A transplant is likely our best path forward."
