She picked it up and saw Zavier Fulton's name on the screen. Feeling guilty for taking so much time off during her internship, she felt she had to answer.
"Hello, Zavier."
"Vivica, how are you feeling? Are you recovering at the hospital or at home?" he asked politely.
"I'm at the Children's Hospital," she explained. "My son is a patient here, and since I need to be on bed rest for a couple of days, it's more convenient to stay here with him."
"Who's taking care of you? Your parents?"
Not wanting to air her family's dirty laundry, Vivica just gave a vague affirmation.
"I'll stop by the hospital to see you tomorrow morning."
Anticipating her refusal, Zavier quickly added, "It's not just me. It's department policy. When a colleague is hospitalized, management always pays a visit."
"Oh, I see…" Vivica still hesitated, wanting to decline but worried that a firm refusal might make him suspect she was faking her injury to get out of work.
"Don't worry, it'll just be for ten minutes. I won't disturb you and your son for long."
"Okay, then. Thank you, Zavier."
"Of course. Rest well."
After hanging up, Vivica became lost in thought. She had expected Zavier to be angry or embarrassed after she'd bluntly addressed his feelings for her, maybe even retaliate at work. Instead, he had become even more considerate than before.
