Vivica was growing more and more certain that she wasn't their biological daughter. She held back from questioning them further, though, afraid of tipping her hand.
Joseph’s expression was equally intriguing; he even let out a cold chuckle.
Vivica cut straight to the chase. "Fletcher Sanford offered to give up all his marital assets, tens of millions, if I sign a statement of forgiveness. You want me to sign one for my father and brother. What are you offering?"
"Vivica, what are you talking about? We're your family. Are you really talking about money with us?" Evelyn’s voice was laced with disbelief.
"What else is there to talk about? Love? Have you ever shown me any love, especially these past few years? You haven't treated me like family at all."
"How can you be so heartless, Vivica? We raised you, after all. Your father was in the wrong today, but no matter what, you can't send your own father and brother to prison. That’s a terrible thing to do."
Vivica listened in silence. She had expected her mother to at least feign some concern, perhaps even pretend to offer help, saying something like, "Let me come take care of you." But as she patiently listened to the rambling, she realized her mother had no such intention. She just wanted to use guilt to make her drop the whole thing.
How absurd!
With the DNA test on her mind, Vivica saw no point in wasting more words and decided to set a trap. "I'm bedridden and have no one to look after me."
Evelyn paused. "Wh-what do you mean?"
Joseph glanced at Vivica, a flicker of surprise in his eyes, but his expression quickly settled as a thought occurred to him.
After a few seconds of hesitation, Evelyn asked tentatively, "Well, how about I come take care of you? I promise I'll look after you, and once you're better, you can just tell the police you won't press charges. How does that sound?"
"We'll see when I'm better," Vivica replied coolly.
Sensing a glimmer of hope, Evelyn’s tone became placating. "Okay... then I'll come tomorrow. Are you at the same hospital as Chaim?"
