The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 145

Before she could finish her sentence, Joseph's phone rang. He glanced at the screen and answered.

“Hello, Chief Connor… Yes, we just left the hospital. Her injuries are quite serious—two transverse process fractures in her lumbar spine. I don’t think she’ll be able to give a statement today… Right. We can wait a few days, or if necessary, arrange for a statement over the phone.”

After hanging up, Joseph let out a dry, humorless chuckle. “I’d love to leave you on the side of the road, but as you can see, even the police are calling me to find you.”

Vivica didn't know what to say. It seemed the police had already mentally bundled the two of them together.

The Maybach pulled away from the hospital. The pain in her back was a constant, throbbing presence, making it impossible for her to think clearly. The doctor said she needed at least a week of bed rest, followed by a month of careful recovery. What was she going to do about Chaim? She had fired the nanny, and her son had rejected the new caregiver. Her parents were completely out of the question. And Fletcher, while legally Chaim’s father, was certainly not going to help now.

The more Vivica thought, the more desolate she felt. Her life had been stable, and now suddenly she was at the end of her rope, completely alone. With her mobility limited, moving out would also be delayed. What if Fletcher changed his mind about the settlement?

A storm of worries brewed in her mind as she stared blankly out the window.

Joseph glanced over and noticed her silence. Her face was strangely calm, but her eyes were red and watery. As he watched, a single tear escaped and slid down her cheek against the window. His jaw tightened. He wanted to offer some comfort, but the words felt awkward and unnatural on his tongue. He knew she was in an impossible situation, besieged on all sides with nowhere to turn. Even with a large settlement, money couldn't solve the immediate problems she was facing.

After a long silence, Joseph was the one to finally speak. “What’s the plan? Should I take you back to the hospital, or home to rest?”

Vivica blinked, quickly composing herself and pushing down her sorrow. “I’ve already called in sick to work. I should go back to the hospital to be with Chaim. That other place… it’s not my home anymore.”
