Vivica looked up, surprised by the coincidence. The officer was the same one who had taken her statement when she reported Fletcher for domestic abuse.
Her face was bleeding, completely marred, and the stinging pain made her head throb. She managed a polite, pained smile. "Yes, it's me. I'm sorry to trouble you again."
"It's no trouble." The officer sighed, surveying the wreckage of the apartment. "Last time it was your husband. What happened this time?"
Quintina jumped in to explain. "Last time her husband beat her. Now they're getting a divorce and she got some money from the settlement. So these people—her parents and her brother—showed up demanding money. Her own child has leukemia and needs that money for treatment, so she refused. Then that old bastard started hitting her. I tried to help, and then… this happened."
The officer's face registered shock as he tried to process the tangled relationships.
Evelyn looked around nervously, then forced a smile at the officer. "Officer, this is just a family squabble. We don't need to trouble you. We can handle it ourselves."
"Absolutely not. This was a group assault, and a knife was involved. What if someone had been killed? We can't just ignore this," the officer stated firmly. He then looked at everyone present. "Alright, let's go. We'll sort this out at the station."
Quintina immediately went to Vivica's side and whispered, "Call Mr. Baird. He'll know how to deal with that horrible old man."
Vivica picked her phone up from the floor. The screen was shattered, but it was miraculously still functional. A ruthless thought was forming in her mind, and she knew she needed Joseph's help. Without hesitation, she dialed his number.
Joseph answered almost immediately. "What's wrong? Can't get into the house?"
He assumed she was calling from the new property and had run into a problem.
It hurt for Vivica to speak. "Mr. Baird, I'm on my way to the police station again. The same one as last time. Could you… could you possibly come over?"
Joseph was still in his office. He froze. "What happened now? Don't tell me Fletcher went after you again."
Vivica's voice was weak. "Not him. But he managed to convince my family to cause trouble for me… We got into a fight, and the police saw me holding a knife."
