Vivica was stunned. She hadn't expected him to walk her out just to discuss this.
Before she could respond, Chaim, still in her arms, wrapped his little arms around her neck and pleaded, "Mommy, let's move soon! I want to live with Uncle Joseph, and I want him to help me build my mech warrior!"
A blush crept up Vivica's neck. "Chaim, I already told you, we're not living with your uncle, just in his house."
"But he can still come over and play with me!" Chaim then turned his head to look at Joseph. "Right, Uncle Joseph?"
Faced with his son's innocent request, how could he possibly say no? Joseph reached out, ruffled the boy's fuzzy head, and smiled. "Of course."
"Yay!" Chaim immediately turned back to Vivica. "See, Mommy? Uncle Joseph said yes!"
Vivica's smile felt a little stiff. She looked at Joseph, her voice low with embarrassment. "Mr. Baird, you don't have to indulge his unreasonable requests. You're so busy with work…"
"That request isn't unreasonable," Joseph cut her off. "Why shouldn't I indulge him?"
Vivica was speechless.
Seeing her reaction, Joseph pressed, "Or is there some reason it would be inconvenient for you?"
His thoughts immediately went to the man who had brought her to the hospital. Vivica would soon be divorced and single. Was that man already eager to move in with her?
At the thought, Joseph's expression darkened. "My house is for you and your son to live in. Don't bring any unsavory characters back and mess the place up."
Vivica's eyes widened in disbelief. "What are you talking about? What do you mean, 'unsavory characters'?"
She'd noticed how gentle and patient he was with Chaim, but the moment he spoke to her, his words were always laced with barbs.
Seeing her bristle, Joseph scoffed. "I'm not calling you out on certain things because I don't want to embarrass you. But I have to remind you, if some newcomer isn't good to Chaim, I won't stand by and do nothing."
