The sky stretched vast and boundless, the grass swayed lowly under the wind, revealing cattle and sheep.
Falcons soared high in the skies, racehorses galloped freely across the plains — Xiao Keyan loved this wild, expansive land dearly.
In Xiliang during June, the pasturelands thrived with lush greenery, and herds of cattle and horses roamed. The much-anticipated annual racehorse festival was quietly approaching.
Ganzhou Prefecture.
The Magistrate’s courtyard.
Dong Jingyi had just finished helping her mother sort out some matters and returned to her own courtyard when a thumb-sized Eastern Pearl suddenly came flying at her from the side.
Xiliang, being a frontier land, had been without war for years. Yet the uninhibited local customs imbued the women of the region with a certain boldness and vigor, free from conventional restraints. With horse herding and sheep grazing as part of daily life, many of them were skilled in combat.
The Eastern Pearl was flying straight toward her, but Dong Jingyi deftly and confidently extended her hand, catching the pearl with precision and steadiness. With a quick turn on her heel, she glanced toward the direction from which the pearl had come.
On the wall stood a girl in red, one hand on her hip and the other playing idly with a second Eastern Pearl. As Dong Jingyi caught sight of the familiar figure, her face instantly broke into a delighted smile. "Princess, when did you return to Xiliang?"
Xiao Keyan tucked away the Eastern Pearl and, with a nimble leap, landed gracefully from atop the wall. Smiling warmly, she walked up to Dong Jingyi. "I’ve been back for a few days now. I just arrived in Ganzhou this morning."
Dong Jingyi, quite accustomed to Xiao Keyan’s presence, looped her arm through hers. "What about the Prince and Princess Consort? Have they returned as well?"
Xiao Keyan nodded lightly. "They’re back, but they had some matters to attend to in Liangdu, so I came to Ganzhou ahead of them on my own."
Dong Jingyi chuckled, "The Princess must have come early to catch the racehorse festival, isn’t that right?"
Over a decade ago, the Prince of Weiyuan had organized the first-ever racehorse festival at the Gandan military stables to review the cavalry archery skills of the Twelve Military Garrisons. The event had been a tremendous success, so much so that the festival became an annual tradition. Every year, it was held as scheduled during June or July.
Initially, only the soldiers from the Twelve Military Garrisons and the border guards participated in the festival. Later on, civilians actively joined in, turning the event into a celebratory gathering shared by Xiliang’s military and its people.
Now, as June unfolded, people from all over Xiliang had already begun arriving in Ganzhou. In truth, the liveliness of June and July in Ganzhou often surpassed that of the New Year.
